The Diagnosis
Two distortions. The same error.
The alpha cult mistakes strength for dominance. The softened ideal mistakes peace for conflict avoidance. In both cases everything revolves around the man himself – admiringly in the one, suspiciously in the other.
The alpha cult
Status, money, dominance – closeness counts as weakness. What looks like strength here is often just fear in loud disguise.
The softened man
Every strength is suspect, and virtue is mistaken for harmlessness. But buried strength is not humility (Mt 25:24–30).
Scripture knows a third way: the man who is watchful, firm, courageous and strong – and who does not waste his strength on himself, but places it in service.
The Way
Four verbs that carry each other.
It is not what a man owns that defines his masculinity, but what he spends his strength on. The twofold mandate stands already in Eden: to work it and to keep it (Gen 2:15).
Create
Bring something into the world that would not exist without you – work, craft, family, faith.
Protect
Keep what has been entrusted to you. Working without keeping plunders; keeping without working goes rigid.
Serve
Whoever wants to be great must be the servant of all (Mk 10:45). Service breaks the circle of the ego.
Love
The measure is Christ: self-gift, not conquest (Eph 5:25).
